According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, practicing meditation may increase brain activity involved in attention, memory, learning, and happiness. Researchers studied eight Buddhist monks who had practicing at least 10,000 hours of compassion meditation (promoting kindness toward all beings) by tracing brain waves.

Two out of three American adults now believe healthcare coverage should be a “guarantee,” as it is in other countries such as Canada and Britain, and three out of four agree that healthcare is as necessary as water, gas, and electricity. These were just some of the findings released by Results for America, a project of the nonprofit and nonpartisan Civil Society Institute based in Newton, Mass. Other findings include:

• 50 percent of adults have seen their healthcare coverage cut or costs go up.

People appear to be eating better as adults than they did as children, including consuming twice the amount of fruits and vegetables and less fat and sugar, according to a research study at Newcastle University’s Human Nutrition Research Centre.

The study involved 200 subjects in the United Kingdom who, as children ages 11 to 12, kept detailed food diaries and answered questions about their diets. Twenty years later, those same subjects again turned over food journals and answers pertaining to diet.
